Small Engine Press was founded on a simple conviction: that good books, made well, find their readers. We work with writers whose voices resist easy categorisation — texts that open questions rather than close them, ideas that accumulate meaning across a lifetime of reading.
Our process is slow by design. Each title moves through editing, design, and production with the attention it deserves. We believe the physical object of the book carries meaning alongside the words it holds.
We publish in small, considered runs. Quality over volume. Permanence over noise.
Current Title
An original critical vocabulary tracing the terms we use to understand, describe, and construct childhood disability — from access and agency through to voice and wellbeing.
Each entry is a close reading: of a word's history, its contested uses, and the stakes involved in how we choose to speak. Essential reading for educators, practitioners, researchers, and anyone who works alongside disabled children and their families.
